Feeling Nervous About Virtual Court? Here’s How to Feel Prepared and Confident

by | Jan 16, 2025

Today we have a post from one of our paralegals, Audrey Richmond. Audrey’s superpower lies in the deep empathy she brings to every client she works with. Known for her thoughtful communication and unwavering dedication, Audrey goes above and beyond to ensure clients feel informed, empowered, and never alone in the process. She is deeply connected to Law Elevated’s mission and brings that same care and commitment to each case she supports, making sure clients not only understand what’s happening—but feel genuinely supported every step of the way.

Showing up to court can be nerve-wracking, and when it’s happening over video, it can feel even more unfamiliar. You might be wondering: Does this really feel like a real hearing? What if I have tech issues? How do I make sure I’m doing everything right?

First, take a deep breath. Virtual court is different, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little preparation, you can show up feeling confident, focused, and ready to handle whatever comes next.

Set Yourself Up for Success

Even though you’re logging in from home, the expectations in a virtual courtroom are the same as if you were walking into a courthouse. That means dressing the part—no need for a full suit, but something neat and professional helps you feel more in control.

Find a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted. If there’s background noise—kids, pets, traffic—it can be distracting, not just for you but for the judge and others in the hearing. Creating a calm, focused environment helps you feel more grounded.

And here’s a big one: log in early. Technical issues happen, and the last thing you want is to be scrambling at the last minute because your microphone isn’t working or your internet is lagging. Plan to log in at least 20 minutes ahead of time so you can troubleshoot if needed.

What to Expect Once You’re Logged In

When you enter the virtual courtroom, your microphone should be muted. Sometimes you will enter the virtual courtroom and other hearings will be taking place. Keep yourself muted if the court has not muted you and keep your video off. Only turn your video on when your case is called. Once your case is called, you will turn your video on and the Judge or Commissioner will acknowledge your presence, your attorney’s presence. You will keep yourself muted until you’re asked to speak (which is rare, that’s what we are there for). This helps keep distractions to a minimum and makes sure everyone can hear clearly.

If you have questions or thoughts while someone else is speaking, jot them down rather than jumping in. If you have retained a Law Elevated attorney we will have an associate attorney or paralegal present with the litigating attorney to speak with you via text or phone during the hearing so that any messages and/or thoughts you have are conveyed to the litigating attorney. Court proceedings can feel tense at times, but interrupting—whether it’s the judge, your attorney, or the opposing side—won’t work in your favor. When it’s your attorney’s time to speak, stay calm, and know that we have your back! If your attorney ever does not know the answer, they will ask the Court for a moment so the associate attorney or paralegal can obtain the answer from you privately, without the Court or opposing counsel listening in on your response.

And one important note: even when you’re not speaking, everyone can still see you. Body language matters. Try to stay neutral—no eye rolls, head shakes, or frustrated expressions. Staying composed, even when things feel frustrating, helps you stay in control of the moment and goes a long way with the Court.

We’re Here to Help You Feel Prepared

It’s completely normal to feel nervous before a hearing. The legal process can feel heavy, but remember—you don’t have to do this alone. Your attorney is there to guide you, and at Law Elevated, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

If you’re worried about your upcoming virtual court appearance, let’s talk about it. We’ll make sure you know what to expect, how to prepare, and what you can do to feel more at ease when the time comes.

Because no matter how uncertain this moment might feel, you are not alone. And when you’re ready, we’ll be here.

Your partner in peace of mind,
Nonie
